Swallowing

Swallowing in a dream is a metaphor for acceptance and emotional nourishment, as in you can “swallow it.” Conversely, difficulty swallowing can reflect a reluctance to accept something that is emotionally charged in your waking life, as in “it’s hard to swallow.” Trouble swallowing in a dream can also reflect physiological issues during sleep. If you have trouble swallowing and/or something is stuck in your throat, and you wake up out of breath, see a sleep doctor immediately! Such “dreams” (they occur outside of REM sleep, when we dream) are common to those who suffer from sleep apnea, a silent killer.  To find a sleep doc in your area, click here.
