I think your hopes of having a relationship with Chris “ died” a bit when you found out about his girlfriend. This is why you dreamed that Chris died – he is no longer available to you. Dreams usually use the symbolism of death to represent change and transition – and someone’s “ going away.” I think you dreamed that he died in a car crash because you know that Chris’ friend Lee died in a car crash only two months ago.
