I had a dream in which I was lying on a bare wood floor in an unadorned room. I was clothed, lying on a large American flag, and I knew that I was dying.

My sister (with whom I have had a distant, strained relationship) was standing nearby, her arms folded, watching without emotion. There was a fluid seeping from my body on to the flag. It wasn’t blood, it was clear, and I wasn’t crying.

I said a couple of times that I hoped no one else would ever have to die this way. Then I pulled a corner of the flag over me and began to roll as the flag enveloped me like a cocoon. I then jerked myself awake. I was not frightened or mournful in the dream.
