Common Dreams

Question: There are two prisoners in jail, waiting for their sentences. They don’t know whether they will be proven guilty or not. Then both of them have a dream.

One dreams that he is in a vineyard, and he is pressing grapes.

The other dreams he is walking and carrying a loaf of bread over his head, out of which birds are eating.

Could you tell me what these dreams imply, and what significance do these dreams have on the two dreamers, and do these have an indication of what the sentence of each of the prisoners might be?

--Saba, Age 19, Karachi, PAKISTAN

Hi Saba -

According to traditional interpretation, the first man will spend time in prison. His dream shows he will work hard - pressing grapes - and then he must wait a long time - his time in prison - for the fruits of his labor to be realized - the maturation of the wine.

The second prisoner, on the other hand, will be found innocent. In his dream he is walking, and he is feeding birds from a loaf of bread on his head. The birds symbolize freedom - and can not be kept in any location. The second man is a friend of the birds - he is a friend of freedom - and freedom will protect him.

Thanks for visiting us all the way from Karachi, PAKISTAN.
